Top 20 World Famous Golf Courses
Golf fans around the world would love to spend a couple of weeks visiting some of the world's most famous golf courses.
The list that follows contains links & a brief description of each course for those of you looking to play some of the world's best golf.
Not all of these courses are open to the public, so you will have to plan accordingly...But, the courses listed here feature rolling fairways & amazing vistas that would impress even the most jaded of tourists.
These courses are listed in no particular order.

1.The Country Club
Located in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts (USA). The Country Club is alleged to have a beautiful course with small greens & gorgeous tree-lined fairways. The course itself is over 100 years old & hosted the Ryder Cup Championship in 1999.
2. St. Andrews
St. Andrews is located in St. Andrews, Scotland. It's supposedly completely treeless & is located on the East Coast of Scotland. Considered to be highly challenging, this public golf course has a greens fee of approximately $125.00.
3. Pine Valley
The Pine Valley golf course is located in Clementon, New Jersey (USA). Built in 1918, Pine Valley has a traditional look & atmosphere. It also has the highest slope rating in the entire country, allegedly a 153!
4. National Golf Links of America
An American Classic, the National Golf Links of America course is a private golf course located in Southampton on Long Island, NY(USA).
5. Oakmont Country Club
Oakmont Country Club is a private golf course with a strong history of competitive golf games. It's located in Oakmont, Pennsylvania (USA).
6. Augusta
Located in Augusta, Georgia, this course is probably the most famous of the United States'. Bobby Jones helped design & create it. It's private & considered to be very exclusive.
7. Cypress Point Club
Located in Pebble Beach, California (USA). Supposedly offers a beautiful seaside course & is considered challenging by golfers. It is a private club.
8. Winged Foot Golf Course
This private golf course was designed and built in 1923 by A. W. Tillinghast. It's located in Mamaroneck, New York(USA). The Winged Foot Golf Course supposedly is quite challenging. It's supposedly characterized by extremely narrow fairways lined by high thick trees.
9. Royal Birkdale
Famous for its humongous sand dunes, the Royal Birkdale golf course is a private facility that was used for the 1998 British Open. It's located in Southport, England.
10. Ballybunion
The old Ballybunion golf course is located in Ballybunion, Ireland. It's considered one of the classic, timeless courses. It's open to the public & costs approximately $75.00 to play.
11. Merion Golf Club
Located in Ardmore, Pennsylvania(USA), the Merion Golf Course has a beautiful park-style design. A great number of 20th Century PGA tournaments were held here.
12. Shinnecock Hills
Shinnecock Hills is a private course that maintains an antique, windswept layout. This course is located in the hamlet of Shinnecock Hills in Southhampton, New York.
13. Turnberry, Ailsa Course
A truly historic course, the Turnberry Ailsa Course is a public facility that charges approximately $150 to play. It is located in Turnberry, Scotland.
14. Baltusrol Golf Club
The Baltusrol Golf Club is a private golf course that was built by A. W. Tillinghast in 1895. With tree-lined fairways & supposedly "magnificent" greens, the Baltusrol Golf Club was home to a large number of PGA competitions throughout the 20th century. It is located in Springfield, NJ(USA).
15. Pebble Beach
Located in Pebble Beach, California(USA). It's considered to be one of the best golf courses in the United States. The view of the Pacific Ocean is supposedly so breathtaking that players lose their concentration in awe of the layout. It's public & also has a resort. The greens fee is approximately $300.
16. Royal Melbourne
Located in Melbourne, Australia. It has been described as both beautiful & treacherous at the same time. It is a private course that is rated as Australia's finest.
17. Muirfield
Located in Gullane, Scotland. Beautiful, breathtaking, & supposedly difficult. The Muirfield course is private.
18. Pinehurst
This course is located at a resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina(USA). Anyone with a few hundred dollars can enjoy a day playing golf at this pine-laden golf course.
19. Olympic Club
Located in San Francisco, California(USA), this course is private & is rumored to be a true test of any golfer's skills.
20. Carnoustie Championship Course
Located in Carnoustie, Scotland. This course was partly designed by legendary golfer Tom Morris. It's public & costs less than $100 to play. It hosted The 1999 British Open & The Open Championship 2007.
